After Cormier defeated Johnson, many thought he would go onto defend the title against Ryan Bader. However, the next one in line to fight Cormier will be Gustafsson. As of now, a specific date has not been set, but the fight is expected to take place sometime this year. A location for the fight has not been announced either.
Dana White, the president of the UFC, spoke on Wednesday and said that Gustafsson will likely be fighting Cormier for the title. Cormier also sent out a Tweet, which said that he is fighting Gustafsson, but it won’t be at UFC 191.
Gustafsson already had a shot at the title back at UFC 165, where he battled against then-champ Jon ‘Bones’ Jones, who surrendered the title. Gustafsson lost the fight after the judges scored the fight in Jones’s favor.
Gustafsson’s recent fight was at the end of January, and it was against Johnson. Johnson defeated Gustafsson via TKO in the first round, and the win earned Johnson a shot at the title, which was held by Jones at the time.
