Six-time Olympic medalist and American swimmer Ryan Murphy won four medals for Team USA at the 2022 FINA World Championships in Budapest.
Murphy won the gold medal in the men’s 200 meter backstroke race, and this marked his first individual world championship title in a long course pool. He clocked 1:54.52, besting British swimmer Luke Greenbank, who came in second with a time of 1:55.16, and fellow American Shaine Casas who claimed the bronze with a time of 1:55.35.
He also won a gold medal in the 4 × 100 meter mixed medley relay for his backstroke leg swim in the preliminaries, which subsequently earned Team USA a spot in the final and a first-place finish.
Murphy won a silver medal in the men’s 100 meter backstroke race with an impressive time of 51.97 seconds; however, Italian Thomas Ceccon broke the world record with a time of 51.60 seconds (Murphy held the previous world record with a time of 51.85 that he set at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro).
In the men’s 4 × 100 meter medley relay race, Murphy won a silver medal as part of Team USA. He swam the backstroke leg while fellow Americans Nic Fink (57.86 seconds), Michael Andrew (50.06 seconds), and Ryan Held (47.36 seconds) swam the breaststroke, butterfly, and freestyle legs respectively. They lost to the Italian team, which had set a European record with a time of 3:27.51.
In his personal life, Murphy turned 27 years old yesterday, and on May 15, he proposed to his longtime girlfriend Bridget. For him, he feels that it is a privilege to represent the United States of America, which he describes as “the greatest country in the world.”
