Review: Vangelis Galiatsatos wins gold medal at European Championships (Includes first-hand account)

The European Weightlifting Championships were held in Pristina, the capital city of Kosovo, where Galiatsatos was able to raise the Greek flag high as the Greek national anthem played in his honor, where he stood from the tallest spot of the podium. He won the gold medal in the 94 kg category, where he was able to successfully lift up a total of 320 pounds.

In his interview with the Greek press, Galiatsatos shared that he was “overjoyed” with his gold medal win, and he got really emotional when he heard the Greek national anthem, where he was moved to tears.

Galiatsatos left Italian weightlifter Cristiano Ficco in second place with the silver medal, and Tomas Romanak from Slovakia in third place with the bronze medal.

The Greek weightlifter is only 17 years old, and he is a part of the “Dream Team” in the Greek island of Kefalonia. Once he returned home to his island, he received a hero’s welcome from friends and family members.

Galiatsatos previously won two silver medals at the World Youth Weightlifting Championships this past April in Bangkok, Thailand.
