Review: Team USA wins the most medals at 2018 Pan Pacific Championships (Includes first-hand account)

Ryan Murphy won the most gold medals in the men’s swimming events for Team USA, with three. Murphy set two championship records in the men’s 100 meter backstroke and 200 meter backstroke respectively and won the 4×100 meter medley relay (along with Andrew Wilson, Caeleb Dressel, and Nathan Adrian).

In the men’s 50 meter freestyle, Michael Andrew won the gold in 21.46 seconds, and Caeleb Dressel won the silver in 21.93 seconds. Dressel also won the silver in the men’s 100 meter freestyle.

In the men’s 200 meter freestyle, Townley Haas won the gold, and Andrew Seliskar won the silver. 26-year-old swimmer Zane Grothe won three different medals at the Pan Pacs: the bronze in the men’s 400 meter freestyle, as well as the silver in the 1500 meter freestyle (where Jordan Wilimovsky won the gold for the United States), and finally, the gold in the 800 meter freestyle.

Dressel was victorious in the 100 meter butterfly, claiming the gold, while Chase Kalisz won two gold medals in the 200 and 400 meter individual medleys.

After a very unfortunate disqualification in the men’s 4×100 meter freestyle relay, Team USA took home gold medals in the 4×200 meter freestyle relay and the 4×100 meter medley relay (as previously mentioned).

In the women’s events, Simone Manuel took home silvers in the 50 and 100 meter freestyle races. Katie Ledecky won gold medals in the 400 meter, 800 meter, and 1,500 meter freestyle races, where Leah Smith claimed the bronze in the same three races as Ledecky.

Although Kathleen Baker came in third in the 100 meter backstroke, she set a championship record in the 200 meter backstroke, winning the gold. Lilly King won the gold in the 100 meter breaststroke, as well as a silver in the 200 meter breaststroke (where American swimmer Micah Sumrall won first place).

Hali Flickinger reigned supreme in the 200 meter butterfly winning the gold, while Melanie Margalis came in second in the 400 meter individual medley.

Team USA came in second place in all three of the women’s relay races: 4×100 meter freestyle relay, 4×200 meter freestyle relay and the 4×100 meter medley relay.

In the 4×100 meter mixed medley relay, Dressel, Michael Andrew, Kathleen Baker and Simone Manuel took home the bronze.
