Kendricks vaulted successfully over 5.87 meters on his first attempt to win first place. Polish pole vaulters Piotr Lisek (who won the silver medal at the London World Championships) and Pawel Wojciechowski both were tied in second place, where they cleared 5.80 meters on their second attempt. 2015 World Champion and Canadian pole vaulter Shawn Barber finished in fifth place with 5.63 meters, while indoor world record holder Renaud Lavillenie (who took the bronze at the World Championships in London) failed to advance, after Lavillenie missed all three attempts at 5.63 meters, thus finishing last.
On August 8, as Digital Journal reported, Kendricks won the gold medal for the U.S.A. at the 2017 World Championships in London, where he cleared 5.95 meters.
This past June, Kendricks set a personal best in pole vault after jumping six meters (19 feet, 8 inches) at the 2017 U.S. Championships. Kendricks became the fifth American athlete to join the six meter club, as well as the 22nd athlete in the history of pole vault to jump over six meters.
