Review: Ramil Guliyev wins the 200 meters at 2018 European Championships (Includes first-hand account)

The European Athletics Championships were held at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin, Germany. Guliyev won the gold medal in the men’s 200 meters final with a championship record time of 19.76 seconds, which is also a national record for Turkey. Guliyev was able to beat the previous championship record of 19.85 seconds that was set by Greek sprinter and 2000 Olympic gold medalist Konstantinos Kenteris back in August of 2002, at the European Championships in Munich.

Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake of Great Britain came in second place with a season best of 20.04 seconds. Alex Wilson of Switzerland claimed the bronze with a national record of 20.04 seconds. This was quite the sprint to watch, and a photo finish for Mitchell-Blake and Wilson, for their second and third place victories. Guliyev also competed in the 4×100 meter relay for Turkey.

In the 4×100 meter relay final, Turkey won the silver medal, with a national record of 37.98 seconds. Great Britain came in first place with 37.80 seconds, and The Netherlands finished third with a time of 38.03 seconds, a new national record.

Last year, Guliyev won the gold medal at the IAAF World Championships in London.
