A Swiss athlete, Lea Sprunger won the gold medal at the 2018 European Championships in the women’s 400 meter hurdles race, which took place in Berlin, Germany. Sprunger completed that intense race in 54.33 seconds, which was a European leading mark this outdoor season. This time was also four-hundredths of a second away from her personal best (54.29 seconds), which she set in July of 2017 in Lausanne.
Following her European Championship win, on August 18, Sprunger also won the IAAF Diamond League event in Birmingham in 54.86 seconds.
Last year, at the 2017 World Championships in London, Sprunger had finished in fifth place in the women’s 400 meter hurdles with a time of 54.59 seconds.
In 2016, Sprunger won the bronze medal at the European Championships in Amsterdam (55.41 seconds), behind Poland’s Joanna Linkiewicz (second place with a time of 55.33 seconds), and Sara Slott Petersen (from Denmark), who secured a time of 55.12 seconds, winning the gold medal.
Aside from the 400 meters hurdles, Sprunger also competes in the women’s 400 meters race, and in the past, she competed in the women’s 200 meters.
