Cleveland Cavaliers all-star and scoring leader LeBron James will be named the NBA’s most valuable player, a source told Associated Press. The Cavaliers are in the second round of the NBA playoffs.
He’s already the top scorer in the 2009 post-season, netting an average of 32 points a game. He was the second-highest scorer during the season. And many sports reporters believe the Cleveland Cavaliers wouldn’t have any playoff hopes without LeBron James leading the team at forward.
Even though it’s practically a shoe-in anyway, the Associated Press confirms James will win the MVP award this week, the NBA’s most prestigious annual honour. James will supposedly receive the award at Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary High School, his alma mater.
At 24, James would be the youngest NBA player to receive the MVP award since Moses Malone won it in 1978-79. He would also be the first Cavalier to take home that trophy.
According to AP, James vied all season for MVP honors with the Los Angeles Lakers’ Kobe Bryant and Miami’s Dwyane Wade. The three played on the U.S. gold medalist Olympic team last summer and played as if they were upstaging each other nightly.
James almost averaged a triple-double — 32 points, 11.3 rebounds and 7.5 assists — as the top-seeded Cavaliers soared through the first round of the playoffs, sweeping the Detroit Pistons in four games. Cleveland will host the Atlanta Hawks in Game 1 on Tuesday.
