After eight years playing “the beautiful game,” Brazil soccer player Ronaldo will hang up on the cleats on Monday, according to The Estado de S. Paulo. The report sparked Ronaldo’s team Corinthians to announce a news conference on Monday afternoon at the team’s headquarters, The Sports Network writes.
Ronaldo also said, “I think about making a play but I can’t execute it.”
The Canadian Press reports Ronaldo’s agent, Fabiano Farah, didn’t confirm or deny the report but told local media that it is a possibility.
The Guardian writes, “His retirement comes days after his former Brazil team-mate Roberto Carlos said he was leaving Corinthians because he and his family were being threatened by fans after the Copa Libertadores elimination.”
Ronaldo has played in three World Cups, bringing his talent to Brazil to help them win the title in 2002 in South Korea and Japan by scoring twice in the 2-0 final win over Germany. He’s the tournament’s all-time scoring leader with 15 goals.
Since 2005, Ronaldo has co-owned the A1 Team Brazil, along with Brazilian motorsports legend Emerson Fittipaldi, Wikipedia reports.
