Op-Ed: Mayweather-Pacquiao could generate over $30 million in gate sales

The projection is based on the maximum sitting capacity of MGM Grand and a minimum general admission fee of $1,000 and maximum of $5,000 for prime seats.

MGM Grand can accommodate up to 16,800 people and at an average gate price of $2,000, the proceeds would sum up to over $30 million.

Because of the large crowd that would choose to see what appears to be the world’s biggest and richest fight in boxing history, the promoters could even raise the general admission or even the prime seats to a higher rate depending on the demand during the initial selling stage of the super fight.

The venue’s limited capacity leaves the promoters with little option but to raise their pricing to maximize the corresponding revenue for the same number of seats.

The MGM Grand is Mayweather’s preferred venue and having claimed to be the A-side of the ongoing fight talks, Pacquiao’s camp (the B-side), relented and agreed to the wishes of Mayweather for the fight to be held at the MGM Grand.

Mayweather announced last month that he has decided to fight Pacquiao after more than five years of negotiations and has calendared the fight for May 2.

During the NBA game featuring the Miami Heat and Milwaukee Bucks, Mayweather crossed the court during the halftime break at the American Airlines stadium in Florida to speak with Pacquiao on the long-delayed super fight.

His brief meeting with Pacquiao was followed up with another meeting at the hotel where Pacquiao was billeted to discuss the remaining and unresolved issues that continue to derail the ongoing negotiations.

It was reportedly agreed between the camps that Mayweather will make the official announcement of the fight but two weeks elapsed and nothing happened.

The other day, the unbeaten American posted a video on his Shots page with this message: ” “We have to make this fight happen,” giving fight fans a new hope for the realization of the fight that they have been wanting to see for a long time.

Meanwhile, Pacquiao has returned to the Philippines to take active role as coach of Kia Carnival, a new member of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), the country’s only professional basketball league.

Asked if the fight with Mayweather will push through on May 2 as planned, Pacquiao remained tight-lipped and requested everyone to just wait for the announcement.

“Let’s just wait for any announcement,” said Pacquiao whose team lost to Barako Bull 95-86 Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
