Op-Ed: Floyd could break own PPV record with Bradley-Khan in undercard

One of the hurdles that the promoters are expected to make in the planned Mayweather-Pacquiao fight is to break Mayweather’s pay-per-view (PPV) sales record during his fight against Oscar de la Hoya in 2007 that garnered 2.4 million buys.

With the massive media exposure that Mayweather and Pacquiao are getting following their unexpected personal meeting last week in Florida, there is little doubt the fight could generate more than 2.4 million PPV buys.

Promoter’s target is to hit over three million PPV buys, which could translate to over $300 million in revenues, excluding other income like gate or ticket sales and advertising income, among others.

Khan and Bradley have figured in several PPV fights and they have shown their ability to attract potential PPV subscribers.

Khan, who has sought a PPV fight against both Mayweather and Pacquiao, has his own loyal supporters, having fought in a number of major PPV events in the US.

For his part, Bradley could also contribute to the PPV target for the super fight after sharing the spotlight with Pacquiao in two of his career-defining fights.

Fight fans would love to see Khan and Bradley in the ring as they have their own fighting styles that make for an exciting and competitive fight.

Khan has 2″ advantage in reach at 71″ against Bradley’s 69″ and in height at 5’9′ while Bradley stands 5’6,” giving Khan a 3″ edge.

Khan (30-3-0,19 KOs) is No, 3 in the Ring’s 147 pounds welterweight rating and is coming off a unanimous decision victory over Devon Alexander last December to register his fourth straight win since losing to Danny Garcia in 2012.

Bradley (31-1-1, 12 KOs) is No.4 in the welterweight Ring rating and is fresh from his split decision draw against Diego Chavez last December after losing his WBO welterweight title against Pacquiao in their rematch last April.

While Khan and Bradley would make for a great main undercard, a Brandon Rios-Victor Ortiz match is likewise worth considering as they both looked good in their last fights and they are no strangers among fight fans aside from having figured in past PPV events.

One of the reasons Mayweather scores well in the PPV promotions is his knack for choosing fighters in his undercard and it has helped him in enticing fight fans to watch his fights.

Meanwhile, Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum decried the slow movement on Mayweather’s side with regards to the resolution of pending issues that cause the delay in getting the fight done.

“There are issues that should be solved in 10 minutes, but it’s a slow dance,” Arum said. “We send one draft to their side and their lawyer sends back a draft with something else that’s an issue. And there doesn’t seem to be any urgency about it on their side. It’s terrible,” Arum added..

Despite Arum’s frustration on the slow pace of the ongoing talks, he is still hopeful that the pending issues will be resolved to the satisfaction of both parties.
