The Silver and Black did add Roy Helu to the back field, but the former Washington Redskins back has had several injuries during his short career and while a major talent, if he can’t stay healthy, the signing does little to help an already struggling offense.
Rumors of a possible trade with Minnesota to acquire All Pro Adrian Peterson persist, despite the Vikings now saying they won’t move the 30-year-old unless it’s a deal they can’t refuse. Oakland does have the fourth overall pick in the first round, but it seems unlikely they would use that to acquire a player entering the twilight of his career.
There has been speculation about dealing down in the first round, a move that would add more picks to a team that needs help at every position. McKenzie is on the hot seat as the team has done little to improve under his guidance and it may take a gamble with picks to finally land some players that can help this squad win football games.
The latest mock drafts have USC defensive lineman Leonard Williams as the best option. If available, the youngster is a can’t-miss player and the type of youngster this franchise needs to get back on track.
While defense is a priority, this team needs to add weapons for young quarterback Derek Carr. Recent reports have Micheal Crabtree possibly moving across the bay, but using a second or third round pick in the upcoming NFL Draft is necessary. Walterfootball has suggested Ohio State product Devin Smith as a possible target. With terrific speed and great hands, Smith could move straight into the starting lineup and help make the upcoming football season a bit more exciting for fans of the Oakland Raiders.
