Injuries and inexperience are the two major contributors to the team’s problems and that has led to several reports in the last couple of weeks of potential trades New York could make to help them over the second half of the NBA season.
Brandon Jennings of Detroit is the biggest name associated in these rumors and the 26-year-old would be a great addition, but with a contract set to pay the floor leader over $8 million per year, it could be wise for the organization to look for a cheaper option, a move that could give the front office more flexibility, not only this season, but also down the road.
The latest news involves Jimmer Fredette. Despite ample opportunities in the league, the former first round pick has yet to establish himself at the professional level, but his recent signing to the teams D-League squad and his superb play since his arrival, could have the 26-year-old back in the NBA and at a much cheaper option than Jennings.
Fredette has averaged 23 points, 4.5 assists and four rebounds per game for the Westchester Knicks and with Phil Jackson in his corner, a move to the Big Apple could happen in the next few days, possibly giving the team the back court boost it needs to make a run at the playoffs over the last few months of the season.
If the franchise is willing to spend big bucks, Ty Lawson of Houston is available. The Rockets are looking to move his big money contract, but despite his experience, the veteran isn’t having a solid season and this could be a reach that costs New York more in the long run than he’s worth.
