Nonito Donaire picks William Prado for March 28 fight in Manila

Donaire (33-3-0,21 KOs) is moving down from the 126 pounds featherweight limit to super bantamweight for the NABF Super Bantamweight title fight.

The five-division world champion and his father-trainer Nonito Sr. believe that the 126 pound limit isn’t right for Donaire as seen in his stunning loss against Walters.

Donaire made a name for himself in the bantamweight level where he remained unbeaten in seven title fights before losing to Cuban Guillermo Rigondeaux in 2013. It was also in the weight limit where he was conferred the 2012 “Fighter of the Year” award.

The NABF title fight will take place at the Mall of Asia in Pasay City Philippines. It will be Donaire’s first fight in his native Philippines since 2009.

It will be Donaire’s first attempt to bounce back from his terrible loss to Walters and a test case for his return to the bantamweight limit.

The 31-year-old Brazilian fighter is coming off a first round TKO win over Marcelo Bispo last year after losing to Scott Quigg at the Bolton Arena, Lancanshire, UK in 2013.

Prado (22-4-0,15 KOs) is a power puncher and a dangerous opponent for Donaire, who is preparing for a major title fight in the bantamweight limit.

Donaire stands 5’6″ with a reach of 68″ while Prado, who is from Sau Paolo is shorter by an inch. Prado is an orthodox fighter while Donaire has the ability to switch from an orthodox to a southpaw stance.

The fight is being promoted in the Philippines by ALA Promotions in cooperation with the ABS-CBN Broadcasting corporation.
