NHL Power Rankings: West still trying to chase down Capitals

Washington has lost just 10 hockey games this season and have a comfortable 17-point lead in the race for the best record in the Eastern Conference and an 11 point advantage over Chicago for the best overall record in hockey. The Capitals are tied with Dallas for the most goals scored this season and with a +61 goal differential, have made a clear statement on who is the best in the 2015-16 regular season.

The real battle is for the top spot in the Western Conference and second in the power rankings. The latest standings have the Blackhawks with a slight one point advantage over the Stars, but with St Louis right on their heels, this race looks like it could come down to the final week of play.

Florida and the NY Rangers are second and third respectively in the East, but the race for the fourth spot is up for grabs. Last year’s champion Tampa Bay Lightning are fourth, but Boston, the NY Islanders, Detroit, and Pittsburgh are all within just two points in the race for that final home ice advantage in the playoff race.

The biggest move this past week comes from the Anaheim Ducks, who have now won five straight games and moved to within two points of the LA Kings for the fourth spot in the Western Conference playoff rankings.

The standings in the West are also tight as several clubs are battling to make the NHL post season. Colorado currently holds the eighth spot, but Minnesota and Arizona could have something to say before the year is finished.

This has been one of the most memorable seasons in years with parody playing a major role. Ratings and fan interest are high and with so many franchises still in the race, has experts believing the playoffs could be the best in years.
