With the start of NHL training camps just a few weeks away, help on the back line and a backup goalie are still needed, but if the latest reports are true, management could have the defender they want in the near future.
Kris Russell is one of the best free agents still available, but according to reports, the veteran is waiting for several teams to clear some cap space before signing. Colorado and Detroit are two franchises looking to add depth on the back line, but rumors have Toronto as the leading contender to sign the 29-year-old.
Last year the veteran split time between Calgary and Dallas, scoring 19 points, a big drop from his previous two years with the Flames, but his speed is an asset the Maple Leafs need, especially on the power play. If added, it would also give the Leafs some leadership on and off the ice, something that has been lacking in the past, but management is looking to change.
Reports earlier this summer had Russell and his agent already turning down a contract from Toronto, but with no other teams making a strong offer, they might revisit the previous money on the table and change their minds.
This team has also been on the market for a backup goalie and several names have been linked with the squad. Jhonas Enroth has been talked about the most on social media and for good reason.
The 28-year-old is a solid backup and his likely salary won’t break the bank, but more importantly, if pushed into the starting role, he has enough experience to handle the duties and keep this team competitive.
