NHL News and Rumors: Joni Ortio to Toronto Maple Leafs?

Acquiring Frederik Andersen was a big step, it gives the team a solid option between the pipes and a player young enough to build around, but with little experience behind the 26-year-old and not much money under the salary cap to work with, finding the right goalie could prove difficult.

Several reports have hit social media in recent weeks, including the possibility of a trade, but it now appears the front office will look at bargain free agents to fill the position and a few names are on the list as candidates.

Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun has released a few possibilities, including Joni Ortio who played for Calgary last season. The 25-year-old has played the last three years in a backup role for the Flames and has done a good job when on the ice.

The former mid-round draft pick has started 34 games in his NHL career, compiling a 15-15-5 record and a solid 2.66 goals against average. His play, along with his age and estimated salary are a perfect fit for the Leafs as they search for the depth they need.

Despite limited experience, Ortio has kept Calgary competitive when taking the ice and for Toronto, that’s all the organization can ask as they look to breakthrough and become contenders in the Eastern Conference.

The front office has spent the last two off seasons looking for the right mix of players, through the draft, free agent signings, and a couple key trades. With the addition of a solid backup behind Anderson and the hope that a couple of the youngsters can put the puck in the net, fans have plenty of reasons for excitement for the upcoming hockey season as the team looks to reach the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
