Hampus Lindholm and Rickard Rakell are both waiting on new deals, but until the front office makes a trade or two, they don’t have the resources to bring the youngsters back to the team. Both players are restricted free agents, but the team doesn’t want to lose either, leading to rumors of other players that could be moved.
One player being linked to trade speculation is defender Cam Fowler. The 24-year-old is one of the best young back line players in the league and would be a great asset for any franchise looking for help. The former first round pick is terrific on the power play and is improving on using his body to help fend off the opposition.
Several hockey clubs are being linked to the young man, including Toronto, who is in need of depth on the back line. The Maple Leafs are expected to be improved this season on the offensive end of the ice, but still need to shore up their defense if they want to become contenders in the Eastern Conference.
With the Ducks in desperation mode, adding Fowler won’t cost the team much in terms of prospects or draft choices. Anaheim needs to move his salary to sign others and the first team that makes a reasonable offer will likely gain his services.
The Maple Leafs are on the verge of becoming a very good hockey team. With the right moves, including adding a few more experienced players, Toronto could put the last decade in the rear view mirror and begin their transition into a contender. Adding Fowler is a solid long-term move that could pay big dividends and create a buzz with the fans as the NHL season sets to get started.
