With just a couple weeks left before the NFL trade deadline, rumors have started on potential moves the organization could make to add more talent through the draft and the latest has tight end Vernon Davis possibly on the move.
The 31-year-old has struggled since Colin Kaepernick took over the starting quarterback job in the middle of the 2012 season. Before that, the former first round draft pick was putting up All Pro numbers, but with a lack of production in the last couple of years, reports have surfaced that he would welcome a move to another team.
Daniel Kramer of Bleacher Report has reported that a deal to Atlanta would benefit both franchises, but for vastly different reasons. The Falcons are one of the surprise stories of 2015, having lost just one game and piling up big offensive numbers. Adding a tight end like Davis would give Matt Ryan another serious weapon, especially in the red zone and make Atlanta’a offense one of the best in the NFL.
A deal now would likely land the 49ers a couple of draft picks, most likely in the middle rounds, giving the team more young talent to rebuild with, plus taking a few million off their salary cap number.
Davis has 431 career receptions for 5,555 yards and 55 touchdowns. Those stats could make a big move upwards with Atlanta, who last had Tony Gonzalez as a pass catching tight end, but have failed to fill his shoes since his retirement.
For two teams headed in opposite directions, they could both still make the most of the situation they are in now with this trad and for Atlanta, it could be the move they need to become serious Super Bowl contenders.
