NFL Trade Rumors: Darren Sproles to San Francisco 49ers?

Bleacher Report football insider Jason Cole has reported the 32-year-old is now holding out from off-season training because of these rumors and is now seeking a new contract, a move that could backfire and make the front office deal the back in the coming weeks.

One team that could have some interest is San Francisco, as the team is looking to bolster the offense under first-year head coach Chip Kelly. The 49ers struggled offensively last year and injuries played a big role in the lack of a running attack, especially over the last half of the 2015 season.

News of the retirement of Jarryd Hayne has also affected the Northern California football team, despite the Australian rugby star playing mostly on special teams last year. The franchise now has just five running backs on their depth chart and none with the skill set of Sproles.

The former fourth round pick of the San Diego Chargers has never been one to carry the ball much, but his ability in the passing game is what sets him apart from other players in the league. With 473 career receptions and 55 touchdowns since entering the league in 2005, the veteran could add a new dimension to the offense in San Francisco and generate some positive publicity with their fans.

It’s hard to image the Eagles looking to deal Sproles, especially after dealing DeMarco Murray, but Philly is clearly looking to make some changes and if backed into a corner over this contract issue, the diminutive back could find himself playing elsewhere in the coming weeks.
