The Cleveland Browns have struggled to win football games and the lack of talent at the skilled positions are a major reason. With troubled wide receiver Josh Gordon out for the year and journeyman quarterback Josh McCown the likely starter for the opener, finding play makers at this point of the year is very difficult, but the front office and players have expressed interest in Rice and he could have a new home shortly.
McCown has told NBC Sports Radio that he would welcome the veteran to the team, telling the station that, “We need to be about second chances and forgiveness, and if the organization does their research and they feel like Ray has moved past that. . . . And there’s some people in our organization that have obviously been around Ray, you know on other teams and such. Then I think we welcome him if he can help us.”
The veteran quarterback isn’t the only player from the team that would welcome the former Baltimore Ravens star. Current starter Terrance West has also mentioned he would welcome Rice with open arms, despite the fact he could lose his starting job with the team.
With six years experience in the NFL, the former second round draft choice has over 6,000 career yards on the ground and 37 touchdowns, but the diminutive back is also terrific in passing situations with over 3,000 yards receiving, making him one of the top duel-threats in the game.
Cleveland needs some good public relations and signing a troubled player might not seem wise, but his remorse and the teams need for help could make this a win-win for both parties and a move that could help the Browns finally win some football games.
