The team has already announced that their young leader won’t play again in the preseason and rumors have the former Baylor star already out for the regular season opener, but what isn’t clear is when he will return.
The league had Robert N. Kurtzke, an independent adviser and neurologist, run tests on the 25-year-old and he reported that he should sit and be retested after at least one week of not playing or practicing. This is the third concussion for Griffin and that has some in the organization worried about his future.
Rumors have now started on signing a potential backup for Kirk Cousins and the latest news has former Redskins and Cincinnati Bengals QB Jason Campbell as a potential candidate.
The 33-year-old had planned to retire, but has yet to send paperwork into the NFL offices and now he could end his career where it all began. With 79 career starts in the league, including 52 in Washington, Campbell could be just what this franchise needs if Griffin can’t play in the coming weeks.
Campbell’s best season came with the Redskins back in 2009 when he completed 64.5 percent of his throws for 3,615 yards and 20 touchdowns. The veteran has over 16,000 career passing yards and 87 touchdown throws to his credit and has played in several different offensive systems in his ten years in the league.
It’s difficult to find any kind of help with just a couple weeks until the regular season kicks off, but luckily for Washington they have a veteran just waiting for a phone call and if it turns out that their team leader is out for any period of time, signing Campbell is a great insurance policy for a team that needs a veteran presence at a crucial position.
