The NFL is about winning football games now and four to five victories just won’t get the job done. Tomsula was handcuffed with a roster that lost several key players over the last 12 months, but he also lost starting quarterback Colin Kaepernick and that could cost the veteran coach his job.
Chip Kelly was recently fired by Philadelphia after just three years, including two seasons with 10 wins, but the offensive guru is expected to get another shot at professional football and the latest rumors have the 49ers as one of the teams with some interest.
Kelly’s fast-paced approach worked in his first season with the Eagles, but without a mobile quarterback to run his system, Philly struggled to maintain the pace needed and couldn’t run the full offense, but that could change if he returns to the West Coast.
Kaepernick was at his best when running the football and trying to keep him in the pocket clearly didn’t work.If the front office decides to keep the former University of Nevada product on the roster, hiring Kelly makes perfect sense.
Hiring the former Oregon Ducks head man would also create a buzz with the fans, something the team and its followers lacked this season.
The 52-year-old is also linked to several other NFL jobs, including Cleveland, Tennessee, and Miami. The only other position that makes sense is with the Titans as the coach would reunite with his Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Marcus Mariota, a reunion that could allow Kelly to run his full offensive system and show that his style of football could work at the professional level.
