Several social media sites have reported that the team could look to trade star forward Blake Griffin, a move that would relieve some tension in the locker room but could also land Los Angeles some much-needed depth, especially on the offensive end of the court.
Fox Sports has reported that a potential trade with Boston could work for both sides. The Celtics would get some star power in the front court and the type of player that might attract other free agents in the next couple of years, something this team hasn’t been able to accomplish since the departure of Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce.
Boston general manager Danny Ainge also has several picks in this year’s NBA draft and using those selections to gain an All-Star caliber player makes good sense.
The Clippers need help at shooting guard and more depth on the bench. The trade rumor has Avery Bradley, Amir Johnson and at least two draft picks headed to Southern California for the 27-year-old.
Griffin, himself a former first-round draft pick, played just 35 games this season and was injured again in the playoff series loss to Portland, but his 21 points and eight rebounds per game are just what Boston is looking for in a front court player as they look to compete with the likes of Cleveland and Toronto for the best team in the Eastern Conference.
Several players have been linked in trade rumors since the regular season ended, including center DeMarcus Cousins of Sacramento. With the resources Ainge has at his disposal this off-season, it seems likely a trade will take place and either of these young stars would create a buzz with fans and help make the franchise a contender for a championship in the near future.
