General manager Danny Ainge has done a solid job over the last few years rebuilding this proud franchise. Adding Al Hortford last season made a big difference, but the veteran center clearly isn’t the type of player that can guide this squad to the promised land.
Grant Hughes of Bleacher Report has suggested some changes over this summer could make this squad a legitimate contender next season and the biggest move would be a blockbuster trade with New Orleans to add All Star Anthony Davis.
The 24-year-old is one of the best players in the game and the type of star power that could not only create some tremendous hype with the fans, but also a move that would make this the team to watch in 2018.
Hughes reported that adding Davis for Hortford, Terry Rozier, a first round pick in next years draft, and potentially another young player could benefit both teams moving forward.
The Celtics would get arguably the best young player in the game, especially when healthy and the Pelicans would get some much-needed veteran leadership, along with some depth that could make New Orleans a threat to make the NBA playoffs next year.
This isn’t the first time this rumor has made news. Reports in the middle of last year surfaced between the two sides, but in the end nothing materialized. The Pelicans added DeMarcus Cousins during the trade period last year and while trading David could create some backlash with the fans, this trade would make this team stronger on both ends of the court and give them some depth that is sorely needed.
In the end, Ainge knows this franchise needs more to win a title and with the resources to make a big move this summer, don’t be surprised to see something big happening in ‘Bean Town and nothing would be bigger than adding a young star like Davis, even if it means overpaying a bit to get a player of this magnitude.
