It looks more horrific than it actually is – in the bottom of the third with no men on and no outs, L.A. Angels’ Mark Trumbo takes a Phil Hughes pitch deep into the gap between right and centre fields. Both Swisher and Granderson make a play for the zinger, and as the ball comes towards them they crash into each other and the ball dribbles off to the side.
Granderson immediately shoots up and throws the ball to the cut-off man, but Trumbo made it to third safely.
After the play, MLB.com quickly posted video of the play.
The error proved to be costly. With the score tied 4-4, Tromo eventually made it home to give L.A. the one-run lead.
As of time of publication, the Angels are tied with the Yankees 8-8 in the top of the seventh inning.
There is no official word from the Yanks, but it looks like Granderson and Swisher weren’t injured in the collision. In fact, after the outfielders dusted themselves off, the video shows the two laughing, smiling and patting each’s back.
