Despite the late year collapse, plenty of good news came from this season and speculation of off season moves have already begun for the pinstripes.
Pitching is always a premium in baseball and franchises can’t win titles without a solid group of pitchers. New York struggled with depth, especially starters and will likely look for help this winter.
Nick Cafardo of The Boston Globe has already suggested general manager Brian Cashman will look to deal for Florida Marlins Jose Fernandez before the start of training camp next February, especially with the farm system now having a number of solid prospects they could use to acquire the help they need.
The 24-year-old is having a solid season in South Beach with an ERA under 3.00 and a better than average strikeout to walk ratio. With Masahiro Tanaka, the Yankees have their the ace, but they need another star pitcher to help extend winning streaks, but more importantly, help stop losing streaks that have cost this squad in 2016.
It appears that this year’s free agent market will be slim for starting pitching, leading several MLB experts to suggest this winter could see a number of trades and with New York so close to being a championship caliber team. Don’t be surprised if you see Cashman pull the trigger on at least one big deal in the coming months.
Another New York team that could look for help this off season is the Mets, despite their late season run that will likely land them a wild-card spot in the National League Playoffs, this franchise needs help, especially behind the plate and that has led to speculation that the front office could look to add Matt Wieters, one of the best offensive catchers in the game.
Joe Giglio has suggested the soon-to-be free agent could land with the NY Mets as they have the team and resources to land some big name talent this off season.
Both of these clubs have performed better than expected this year and with a bit of help added to their respective rosters, winning a World Series in the near future is possible. Look for both franchises to become proactive this winter and with some luck, 2017 could be a year to remember for one of these teams.
