Pitching seems to be the key for Toronto with three members of the starting rotation entering some sort of free agency. Of course the big name is David Price, and while the fans and team would love the lefty to stay, money will play a big role in where he continues his career and that could leave the Blue Jays looking elsewhere for help.
With all the news and rumors since their season ended, few have suggested positional players, but the latest from Keegan Matheson of Fan Sided tells a different story.
Matheson reports that Justin Morneau would be a terrific addition this winter as the veteran became a free agent last week after Colorado declined the option on the 34-year-old for the 2016 season.
The lefty played just 49 games last year for the Rockies, but in that time he batted .310. With 241 career home runs and the ability to move runners in key situations, something the team failed to do against the Royals in the ALDS, Morneau would fit nicely in the bottom half of the order and give the team another solid bat heading into the 2016 MLB season.
Reports have the bullpen as another priority this off season and several names have already surfaced as possible help. Tyler Clippard has closing experience and a lifetime ERA of 2.88 and while the veteran allows plenty of fly balls, his style of pitching could fill a big need for the team and take some pressure off whoever is in the starting rotation next season.
This franchise is in good position to repeat as AL East Champions, but the next GM will need to make some wise moves. Keeping Price would be ideal, but these two mentioned above could make this team stronger in the long run and allow the franchise to focus some money on other areas of need.
