News that Zack Greinke is opting out of his deal to become a free agent was expected, but still a blow and with a payroll that could reach $250-300 million, the chances of resigning the 32-year-old seem unlikely.
If the Boys in Blue are looking to spend big bucks this off season, David Price is an option. The hard-throwing lefty is younger, just 29 years of age and has plenty of big game experience, despite his recent troubles in the playoffs.
Another option and one that makes more financial sense is Jordan Zimmermann from the Washington Nationals. The 29-year-old is a solid MLB starting pitcher, compiling a career 70-50 record with a 3.32 ERA. The right-handed pitcher will get big money, but not in the same range as Price and that would allow the LA Dodgers to use their money on other areas of need.
Johnny Cueto of Kansas City and Jeff Samardzija of the Chicago White Sox are other starting pitchers linked to the team and while both of these players are capable, they both have some issues that could hurt Los Angeles when it comes to pressure situations and late season must-win games.
Trade rumors are also circulating on social media with Atlanta Braves youngster Julio Teheran, the most popular target. The 24-year-old is owed $40 million over the next four seasons and with 39 victories over the last three years, a bargain young player that has proved durable in his short baseball career.
As stated above, the window is closing for this franchise and with a change at manager and few roster moves expected, 2016 could be their best shot at a World Series appearance before a roster overhaul takes place.
