MLB Rumors: James Shields to Boston Red Sox?

James Shields is the biggest name still available on the free agent market and the latest news report from CBS Sports has suggested seven teams are still in the hunt for the veteran starting pitcher.

Last season with Kansas City the 33-year-old disappointed in the post-season, losing both his starts in the World Series against San Francisco, but with a 14-8 record and solid 3.21 ERA, the hard throwing right-hander is still ace material and will command a big money contract and that could limit the number of clubs willing to sign him.

Rumors from Bleacher Report have indicated that Boston is one team that has the money and need for Shields. The Red Sox lack a true ace on their staff and need some help on the mound to rebound from a poor 2014 season.

The veteran knows the AL East, having pitched his seven years with Tampa Bay. That experience and his leadership skills would be a great addition in ‘Bean Town’ and a move that would generate some buzz with the fans.

Another big name starting pitcher that would help Boston is Max Scherzer. The former Detroit Tigers star is looking for a huge contract this off-season, some reports estimate $200 million, a number that could scare off a number of teams looking for help, including the Red Sox.

With Scott Boras as his agent, many MLB experts believe the 30-year-old won’t sign until next month and many believe he will return to Detroit, but if the Red Sox did make a move, adding a stud like Scherzer could make them the favorites to win a title in 2015.
