Manchester United appoints heralded José Mourinho as manager

Mourinho signing

The Red Devils signed the Portuguese Mourinho 5 months after he was sacked by Chelsea and only days after sacking their previous manager, Louis van Gaal, who was shown the door Monday after much speculation.

Man United has won 20 Premier League titles, the most of any club, but sat 5th in the tables for 2015-16, tied in points with their arch-rivals Manchester City. Leicester City won its first ever league title in 2015-16.

Mourinho’s relationship with his bosses soured in Chelsea, which finished 10th out of the 20 this season. Mourinho was not around for the all of it, however, having left the club, the club said “by mutual consent,” in December after they’d lost nine of 16. His departure came just 7 months after they’d won the 2014-15 league title.

Mourinho: Right moment

The always confident Mourinho, 53, told media Friday the job of managing an historic club such as Manchester United is for the great managers and that he is ready to take it on. He is aware there is work to be done, he told media, but relishes getting down to it.

“I think I am in the right moment in my career because Man United is one of these clubs where you need really to be prepared for it because it is what I used to a call giant club,” Mourinho said. “Giant clubs must be for the best managers and I think I am ready for it, so I could say I am happy, I am proud, I am honoured, I am everything.

“But the reality is that what I love is to work,” he added. “And I cannot wait for the 7th of July to go on the pitch.”

The controversial and charismatic Mourinho is considered one of the greatest tactical football managers in the game’s history. He has won the Euro Cup and titles in four different countries, including England, where he lead Chelsea to 3 titles in two stints as manager, the first beginning in 2004.

Mourinho signed a 3-year contract; financial details are not yet released.
