American pole vaulter Katie Nageotte has a major reason to celebrate. She won the gold medal for Team USA in the women’s pole vault competition. Digital Journal has the scoop.
Nageotte was able to clear 4.90 meters on her second attempt which was enough to secure her the gold medal. She also attempted one try at 5.01 meters with no success.
Particularly impressive about Nageotte was that she nearly failed to clear her opening height, missing the first two attempts but she had only two more misses the rest of the way, clearing 4.90 meters (16 feet, 1 inch) to outduel Anzhelika Sidorova of Russian for women’s pole vault gold.
Russian pole vaulter Anzhelika Sidorova finished in second place with a jump of 4.85 meters, which she cleared on her first attempt. British pole vaulter Holly Bradshaw took home the bronze medal, also with a clearance of 4.85 meters, but the countback rule was in Sidorova’s favor.
2016 Olympic gold medalist Katerina Stefanidi (from the Rio Olympic Games) came in fourth place with 4.80 meters.
