Gilas Pilipinas soars with 55-point lead to trash Malaysia 106-51

It was Gilas’ third win in as many games in the ongoing SEABA tournament featuring seven national teams from participating Southeast Asian countries.

Gilas won over Myanmar 147-40 in the opening games last Thursday. On Saturday, the team trounced Singapore 113-66 to remain unbeaten after today’s (Sunday) victory against Malaysia.

The winner for the week-long tournament will represent SEABA in the 2017 FIBA Asia Cup which will take place in Lebanon from August 10 to August 20, 2017.

South East Asian countries participating the the 2017 SEABA Games include Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

The Philippine team is composed to selected top players in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) which include Calvin Abueva, Japeth Aguilar, Raymond Almazan, Andray Blatche, June Mar Fajardo, Allein Maliksi, Jovani Jalalon, Roger Pogoy, Terence Romeo, Troy Rosario, Jason Castro and Matthew Wright. Gilas’ victory today coincided with the celebration of Mother’s Day which is being observed every year in the Philippines on the second Sunday of May.

“Hopefully we were able to play in a way that would make our moms proud,” said Gilas coach Chot Reyes after its third victory Sunday in the ongoing SEABA games.

In the early games, Indonesia beat Thailand by one point at 60-59 while Vietnam prevailed over Myanmar 77-44.

Next game for the Philippine team will be on Tuesday, May 16 against Thailand.

Quarter scores: 36-17, 61-26, 88-35, 106-51.
