Rising star Mason Briggs chatted about his love for volleyball, the VNL (Volleyball Nations League), and his latest endeavors.
A libero, Briggs comes from a family of collegiate volleyball players. His parents play and coach, his brothers, cousins and his uncle owns a volleyball club.
As upcoming talent in the VNL and professional indoor volleyball circuit, he attends Cal State Long Beach as a junior and is known for his charisma on and off the court.
He has played a key role in his team advancing to its sixth NCAA tournament appearance in the last seven seasons. Mason is from Valencia originally and has been on the national team for two years.
Volleyball Nations League (VNL)
The Volleyball Nations League (VNL) has announced its athlete line-up for eight countries competing in Anaheim, California. Team USA will feature local Southern California athletes amid 10 Olympians and six newcomers in this prestigious indoor volleyball tournament, which determines global ranking.
“It’s amazing,” he exclaimed. “It’s a mix between goals accomplished, dreams coming true and learning from the guys I am playing with and working with, it’s awesome.”
Mason Briggs: A goal-driven player
Each day, he is driven by his lofty goals. “I’ve had goals for a while now, and I’ve always been goal-oriented whether they are short-term or long-term,” he said. “My ultimate goal with the sport is to go to the Paris 2024 Olympics, the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, and the 2032 Olympics in Brisbane.”
“I also have one more year of college and my goal is to win a national championship,” he said.
He is drawn to the sport of volleyball for the following reason: “I love being able to compete and be on a team in a real team sport. In my opinion, it’s the ultimate team sport.”
Advice for young volleyball players
For young and aspiring volleyball players, he said, “Make those goals, write something down, even if they feel out of reach, and work towards those. Keep your head down and keep working with those goals.”
The digital age
On being an article in the digital age, he said, “It’s crazy, I used to not be so much into it but then I did the USA national team development program, which was high performance, and that was one of the moments where I got into social media to communicate with my family better.”
“Technology can definitely be something valuable if it is used the right way,” he added.
Stage of his life
Regarding the title of the current chapter of his life, Briggs said, “Not Done Yet.” “There is more to come,” he admitted. “There is just more to come.”
When asked what superpower he would have, Briggs responded, “I would love to be able to fly. I would love the feeling of freedom, and how cool it would be to gain that perspective, and the different ways to look at things.”
If he were to do any track and field event, it would be some type of running because he would enjoy the mental battle that goes along with it. He revealed that his favorite stroke in swimming is “freestyle.”
Success
On his definition of success, he said, “Success is the journey and everything that goes along with it. Success can be measured in so many different factors and variables, and it can’t just define you in one way or another.”
Fans
For his fans, Briggs said, “It takes a village. Everyone from my parents to my family to my brothers, my coaches, my girlfriend, my teammates, and everyone. I really see and feel gratitude and gratefulness, especially when other people are along with me on the ride.”
New app in the works
Briggs shared that he is working on an app, with a developer friend of his from school, which is in the beta version. “Hopefully, we will be rolling out the app at the end of summer, that is cool,” he said.
