Two-time Olympic medalist pole vaulter Katie Moon chatted about her latest endeavors in athletics.
Moon participated at the press conference prior to the 2025 USA Track & Field Indoor Championships, which was held on Friday, February 21st. Moon was joined by the following Team USA athletes, who were a part of the media panel: Josh Hoey, Grant Holloway, Alexis Holmes, Jasmine Moore, and Vernon Norwood.
At the Tokyo Olympic Games, Moon won the gold medal, while last summer at the Paris Olympics, she claimed the silver medal in the women’s pole vault.
Moon is also a two-time world champion in the sport, winning gold medals in 2022 and 2023 at the Eugene and Budapest World Championships respectively.
Lessons learned from the Summer 2024 Olympics to the present indoor season
On the lessons learned from the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris to the present indoor season, Moon reflected, “It just taught me that when it comes down to a championship, I am resilient, and I am able to show up on the day. That is something that I am so grateful for. That’s a culmination of all of the seasons.”
“Last year, I delt with bad tendonitis in my Achilles for most of the year and I didn’t have a great season,” she noted. “I don’t think I won a single Diamond League.”
“Even though I wasn’t having a great year, it instilled this confidence that anything can happen as long as you put in the work, and as long as you still show up on the day,” she elaborated.
“As long as you have the fitness behind you, you are still the same athlete that you were, and this was a continuation of that,” she acknowledged.
“Overall, this showcased my resilience and my ability to show up on the day,” she added.
Moon on living in Tulsa, Oklahoma
On being an Olympic gold medalist living in a city like Tulsa, Moon said with a sweet laugh, “Honestly, most of the time I go pretty unnoticed.”
“If I get recognized anywhere, I definitely get recognized in Cleveland,” she noted. “My coolest interaction was at a Sephora after I had just got a massage, and I wasn’t wearing any USA gear.”
Moon continued, “There was an eight-year-old girl that kept looking at me… and her mom came up to me later and asked me if I was ‘Katie Moon.’ Her daughter recognized me… so to get recognized by a little girl (who probably isn’t on social media) is the coolest experience.”
“Again, I wasn’t’ wearing anything that was glaringly obvious that I was from Team USA or pole vaulting, so that was really awesome,” she acknowledged.
“As a whole, I fly under the radar for the most part,” she admitted.
