Baltimore Orioles: Jordan Zimmermann top free agent target?

The loss of Nelson Cruz and Nick Markakis last winter was huge, especially in the locker room, but the offense remained strong and that’s leading many baseball experts to believe the front office will target at least one starting pitcher when free agency begins.

Rumors have already started and the latest from Kyle Andrews of Fan Sides has suggested the O’s look to sign Jordan Zimmermann. The 29-year-old had a solid season with the Washington Nationals, finished the year 13-10 with a 3.66 ERA. With four straight years of double-digit wins and 70 for his career, Zimmerman would be a great fit in Baltimore.

Andrews also has Scott Kazmir as a possibility. The 31-year-old has a bit more experience and has pitched in the AL East before when he played in Tampa Bay and while his salary demands will likely be less, he does have past injury concerns and that should limit the years guaranteed on any contract offer.

Despite the need for pitching, the team could lose Chris Davis, who is expected to receive a new deal over $100 million, likely out of the Orioles price range. With youngster Christian Walker waiting in the wings, letting the first baseman go and using that money to add players that fill other areas of need is a strong possibility.

Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report has suggested Colby Rasmus could be added as a corner outfielder. The 29-year-old didn’t hit for much of an average for Houston, but he did belt 25 homers and he’s hit at least 14 homers in every year he has played in the MLB.

This is a big off season for the organization, but with some solid moves and perhaps a trade, this club could be right back in the hunt for a division title in 2016.
