This year was no different as Georgia State guard R.J. Hunter made a name for himself and his school. The youngster has good size at 6’6″, but more important was his ability to put the ball in the basket when the game was on the line.
The latest mocks have the 21-year-old falling just out of the lottery selections, but with several quality teams picking later in the first round, Hunter could play a big role off the bench for a team like Dallas or Golden State next season.
Teams looking for help in the back court will have several options when it comes to “sleepers” in this year’s draft. Jerian Grant of Notre Dame fits the mold. despite playing four years for the Irish. With over 19 points per game this past season, Grant isn’t the prototypical point guard with his score first attitude, but for teams like Oklahoma City, who already has Russell Westbrook, his style of play could be a perfect fit to begin his NBA career.
One of the best feel good stories in this year’s draft will be Utah’s Delon Wright, younger brother of Dorell Wright. The Utes star point guard has overcome difficulties to play four years of college basketball and will now find himself looking to make an impact in the professional game.
Wright is physically gifted and has the right mental makeup to become a star, especially since reports have the young man already working on improving his shooting mechanics with a coach. Despite his outside shooting woes, he can drive with the ball and play tremendous defense, both of which would fit well with a team like San Antonio, who needs some youth and depth in the back court.
