Webnation and Amber Mac bring social media back to Canadian TV (Includes interview)

One of Canada’s most popular new media specialists is returning to Canadian TV. Amber MacArthur and her Webnation show will air CP24 every Wednesday, covering the latest news in technology, Web trends and digital leaders.

For anyone interested in new media and tech in Canada, they likely have heard of Amber MacArthur. A new media maven and online junkie, MacArthur has been host of Webnation since it began in 2007. The show originally aired on CP24 in Canada, but was taken off-air to exist online only after January 2007.

Now, to the excitement of tech fans and social media fanatics, Webnation and MacArthur are returning to CP24 every week, broadcast on Wednesdays at 5:15 p.m. ET. It airs on CP24 in Toronto and Southern Ontario as well as on Expressvu satellite.

“We want to bring the medium of the Web to television,” says Darren Weir, senior producer of information programming at CTV’s CP24. “Who better to help us make that crossover than Amber MacArthur who has a decade of experience in the tech world?”

The first episode will feature author Margaret Atwood speaking about the next-gen tools she uses to promote her new novel. MacArthur will also discuss Google Wave, Windows 7 and the iPhone Auto-tune application. Also, Clay Shirky will give a peek into his vision of the future of news.

DigitalJournal.com had a gut feeling MacArthur was going to get big in the tech world — in 2007, Digital Journal profiled the “Web 2.0 empress” and in January 2008 DigitalJournal.tv found out what makes her many Web projects resonate with audiences.

MacArthur has been busy in the past few years. After departing momentarily from CP24, she has been asked to be a keynote speaker at several tech conferences, and she also produces and hosts a vidcast called CommandN. MacArthur is also a recent mother, as any Facebook friend or Twitter follower of hers can attest.

“Technology plays an increasingly important role in the lives of so many Torontonians and this show will address the appetite for the latest breaking news from the Web,” Bob McLaughlin, Vice President and General Manager of CP24, said in a statement.

Webnation.tv has been operating as a partnership with DiscoveryChannel.ca. Content from the site will also be incorporated into the shows airing on CP24. CP24 is known as a 24-hour news channel based in Toronto, and is owned by CTVglobemedia.
