Viral photo sums up the subzero chill affecting 180 million Americans

By Tuesday, a big chill covered about half of the country. In New York City, the high was expected to be 10; in Boston, around 18, as AP writes. Chicago faced a low of -15 on Monday night, and on Tuesday afternoon is dealing with three-degree temps.

How best to visually represent the shivering temperatures in one photo? Thanks to Twitter and reddit, a photo of Chicago’s waterfront is spreading across the Web.

Uploaded to Twitter by Weather Channel producer Shawn Reynolds, the photo was taken by Hank Cain, Shawn’s pilot friend. He wasn’t flying the plane in the photo, though, since the pic was taken from behind the wing.

The photo shows ice conditions surrounding the city. One commenter on reddit likened it to a scene out of The Day After Tomorrow.

This week has been so cold in Chicago that the city’s Lincoln Park Zoo says its polar bear, Anana, was kept inside.

As reported on Digital Journal, parts of North and South Dakota, Minnesota, Montana, Iowa, Michigan, Nebraska and Wisconsin have seen temperatures as low as 40 degrees Fahrenheit below average.

AP adds how across the South, records were being shattered: Birmingham, Ala., dipped to a low of 7, breaking the record of 11 degrees set in 1970. Atlanta felt a record low of 6. Huntsville, Ala., dropped to 5, Nashville, Tenn., got down to 2, and Little Rock, Ark., fell to 9. It was just 1 degree at Washington Dulles International airport, eclipsing the 1988 mark of 8.
