Calgary’s iStockphoto now offers legal guarantee on images

iStockphoto, a micropayment stock photo agency, has announced it is giving customers a legal guarantee starting tomorrow, the first micropayment agency to cover every file in its collection from photos to videos to audio.

iStockphoto, based in Calgary, Alberta, is promoting its new legal guarantee, which will cover a customer’s legal costs and direct damages totaling $10,000. This guarantee won’t cost the customer anything.

In addition, more concerned customers can buy an extension of the guarantee for 100 iStock credits, “increasing iStock’s coverage for legal fees and direct damages up to a combined total of $250,000,” DigitalJournal.com has learned from its press release.

Credits cost $1.18 to $1.86, depending on how much of the credits are bought in bulk.

iStockphoto allows customers to buy images for as low as $2 per photo, while also offering a subscription service.

Kelly Thompson, Chief Operating Officer of iStockphoto, said in a statement: “Our first line of defense has always been – and continues to be – our rigorous inspection process. The Legal Guarantee is simply an added layer of protection for our customers, many of whom are using microstock more than ever before.”

iStockphoto assures its customer that every photo is inspected thoroughly to determine if it has committed any copyright violation. It also publishes a technical wiki on copyright and trademark issues making news across the world.

A subsidiary of Getty Images, iStockphoto began in 2000 as a micropayment photography business. It pays out approximately $1.2 million weekly in artist royalties.
