The Mac App Store will be available in 90 countries and will include free and paid applications in six categories (Education, Graphics & Design, Games, Lifestyle, Productivity and Utilities), according to a press release. Just like on smartphones, you can purchase, download and install apps on a Mac and start using them immediately.
The Mac App Store will be available to Mac OS X Snow Leopard users as a free download through a Software Update.
“The App Store revolutionized mobile apps,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “We hope to do the same for PC apps with the Mac App Store by making finding and buying PC apps easy and fun. We can’t wait to get started on January 6.”
Developers with apps featured in the Mac App Store will earn 70 percent of the sales revenue (Apple keeps 30 percent for hosting), and will not be charged for free apps and credit card fees.
No word on when or if PCs will be able to access a desktop version of the App Store.
