Why Virtual teams use the LEGO® Serious Play® method to build engagement

LEGO® Serious Play® methodology brings about behaviour change, build a positive organizational culture and set strategy.

The past two years has caused enormous disruptions to the culture and fabric of organizational teams that now work remotely and communicate virtually. Organizations are constantly seeking ways to reduce the risk of virtual or hybrid teams reducing their productivity or worse still, becoming dysfunctional.

The LEGO® Serious Play® methodology is based on substantial academic research that includes theories of learning, psychology, and behavioural science. The process was developed over the past 20 years and is based on the power of storytelling to transform teams as they develop a deeper trust and understanding amongst all team members.

After all, according to Gallup highly engaged teams “produce better business outcomes than other employees — across industry, company size and nationality, and in good economic times and bad. But only 15% of employees worldwide and 35% in the U.S. fall in the “engaged” category.” (Gallup, 2022)

Johan Roos and Bart Victor were the original developers of the methodology as they explored the power that teams can generate if they communicate on a deeper level. LEGO® models are used as a trigger or fire-starter for stories that bind teams by improving authentic communication. Teams who work in the ‘flow zone’ are more productive because they do not experience anxiety or boredom. This is where the LEGO® Serious Play® method ensures that team members feel psychologically safe so that they are ready to experiment and innovate. The method creates the environment where all team members feel safe to share ideas and put forward their opinions, even when they do not meet in person.

The ultimate goal is that when team members build their own models using the LEGO® Serious Play® method and talk about their perspectives and ideas, they unlock new perspectives. Everyone contributes on an equal basis to avoid 20 percent of the people talking 80 percent of the time. By giving everyone a voice in the team, stronger collaboration develops.Professor David Gauntlett explains more in this video: Lego interview, March 2013

Teams from top brands such as SAP, Microsoft and Hewlett Packard use the LEGO® Serious Play® method to build teams who are ready to solve complex problems, develop leadership skills and improve their communication on all levels. They set goals, develop strategies, and onboard new team members effectively.

Consultants, facilitators, and executive coaches are able to learn how to apply the methodology in their own work with team members and other stakeholders. They gain the skills to plan and facilitate LEGO® Serious Play® sessions so that they achieve positive outcomes for all participants, even when they are not all physically in the same space.
