Southland Symphony Orchestra Announces Composition Contest

Attention Indigenous Composers of the Americas – the Southland Symphony Orchestra of Ontario California invites submissions to our composition contest

$250 cash prize/public performance at Season Opening Concert October 10, 2021

Jul. 26, 2021 / PRZen / ONTARIO, Calif. — Eligibility:
Open to indigenous composers of the Americas (including Canada Indigenous/First Nation, Native American, Mexican, LatinX, South-Central American, Puerto Rican, Caribbean Islanders, Hawaiian, etc.)
No age restriction

Requirements:
Submission deadline August 31, 2021. Winner will be announced September 5, 2021.

Composition should be 6 – 20 minutes in length. (No longer than 20 minutes).

“Premieres” preferred, but piece may be previously composed or performed, with Southland Symphony Orchestra holding all rights to this performance.

Submission must include PDFs of full score and all individual parts.

MIDI/Virtual mock-up recording recommended but not required

Your composition must be able to be performed by a traditional community level chamber orchestra. Some additional specialized traditional indigenous instruments may be used IF you can supply the instruments (or provide information about how to acquire them at low cost).
If those instruments require specialized techniques, you must provide the performers/provide instruction for our musicians.

Performance will be recorded and streamed. All rights for this performance belong exclusively to the Southland Symphony Orchestra.

Decision of judges is final. Judges reserve the right to withhold award if no qualifying submissions are received.

Available Instrumentation (these are the MAXIMUM numbers – you may use fewer instruments)
2 flutes (one may double on piccolo); 2 oboes (one may double on English horn)
2 clarinets; 2 bassoons
4 horns; 3 trumpets; 2 trombones: 1 bass trombone: 1 tuba
Harp (It may be possible to feature the harp as a solo instrument)
Timpani; plus 1 additional Percussionist (utilizing “standard” instruments or specialized instruments provided by the composer)
Strings 6-6-4-4-2

Send pdf score and parts to drmann@southlandsymphony.com. Include a cover letter with your contact information, title of your piece, and your indigenous affiliation. If possible, include a recording (video or audio) of your piece (MIDI/Virtual Mock-up is sufficient). Submission deadline is August 31, 2021. No exceptions/extensions. Winner will be announced September 5, 2021.
