Solar Earth and BASF Create Innovative Coating for ‘World’s Toughest Solar’

BASF and Solar Earth advance the next wave of solar power applications to transform everyday infrastructure into a renewable energy source

Vancouver, BC – September 18, 2022 – The ‘world’s toughest solar’ just got tougher, thanks to an innovative surface coating that Solar Earth Technologies Ltd. co-developed with the BASF Group, the world’s leading innovator in creating surface materials.

“Solar power has always been limited by its inherent fragility. We have solved that problem,” said Solar Earth CEO Douglas Matthews. “Solar Earth is tough enough to be installed on sidewalks, parking lots and other hardscapes because it can withstand up to 5,000 kilograms of weight and harsh weather conditions. Our new abrasion layer developed with the world-class innovators at BASF makes Solar Earth tougher than ever. You can literally stand an elephant on a Solar Earth panel and it won’t crack. This technology is part of our path to a net zero world.”

Working with Solar Earth, BASF specifically designed and optimized a polyurethane (PU) for Solar Earth’s panels to provide superior abrasion resistance, mechanical performance and a prolonged product lifespan.

“BASF’s co-creations demonstrate how it is empowering the future together with strategic partner collaborations, enabled by its broad portfolio of innovative material solutions and competencies. With our material and technical expertise, we collaborate to develop solutions that address market needs and accelerate innovations to market,” said Andy Postlethwaite, Senior Vice President, Performance Materials BASF Asia Pacific.

The collaboration is part of the ongoing partnership between BASF and Solar Earth to develop innovative energy-efficient technologies that will advance the next wave of solar power applications.

About Solar Earth

We are a new form of solar power that transforms everyday infrastructure into a source of revenue-generating solar energy for a Net Zero World. Human beings have spent a long time paving over the Earth. Solar Earth now transforms those surfaces into the toughest, most versatile sources of solar energy yet made, withstanding pedestrians, bicycles, vehicle traffic, theft, vandalism and extreme weather. Solar Earth embeds solar cells — those oh-so-delicate eggshells so easy to break — into a rock-hard, resilient surface. It allows us to “solarize” sidewalks, roads, parking lots rooftops, docks and more by putting solar cells inside that infrastructure. Our breakthrough technology captures the power of the sun to “solarize” infrastructure and generate secure, free, clean energy to fight climate change and get the planet to a Net Zero world.
