Shinto’s Pet Food Kitchen & Store Announces Another Expansion

This company helps dogs and cats across the country live healthier and longer with organic pet food, treats, and health products by its pet chef nutritionist.

Shinto’s Pet Food Kitchen & Store, a grassroots pet food kitchen, expands to providing science-backed meal plan services to pet owners across the country. Founded in 2011, the company was established to offer organic and nutritious pet food, treats, and health products especially formulated by its owner Lindsey McClerin, a pet chef nutritionist.

McClerin built Shinto’s Pet Food after her dog Shinto got sick with ovarian cancer at the age of 10. At that time, McClerin just lost her husband Kip to a brain aneurysm and Shinto was the only one left in her treasured family life with Kip. Determined to help Shinto with her illness and keep her healthy, she went on a mission to study pet nutrition and cook Shinto’s meals by herself.

As she was researching the ideal diet for Shinto, she found out that frequently packed pet food contains preservatives and additives and lacked essential nutrients. Astounded by her discovery, she started preparing Shinto’s meals to raise her white blood cell level. Shinto lived another six years after that.

After her successful mission, McClerin relocated to Grass Valley in 2010. In 2011, she earned her certification as a pet nutritionist and opened “Shinto’s Pet Food” in her home. Her first shop experience was at the North Star Farmer’s Market in Grass Valley and soon after, she was selling her products at 18 farmers’ markets in surrounding areas.

When she entered the Agricultural Institute of Marin’s farmers’ market in San Rafael, the largest in California, her business spawned wholesale accounts. The demand was so great that the store had to quickly expand by adding equipment like freezers and building a brick-and-mortar store. With help from family and friends, she opened a physical store in June 2016.

In 2017, she offered pet food cooking classes. Since then, Shinto’s Pet Food has become the go-to store for pet owners in California, especially those who have pets battling illnesses. Today, McClerin’s science-backed meal plan services not only aim to help pet owners. It also serves as her advocacy to raise the bar of pet care around the country.

“Our vision is to have a direct hand in the revolution of the commercial pet food industry by establishing a higher standard. Our pets deserve better than what the commercial pet food industry is currently offering, which is a whole lot of cost-cutting and not much nutrition or care for our furry friends,” says McClerin.

According to McClerin, pet owners should always be mindful of questionable ingredient labels as definitions can be much different than what they are in human foods, even with seemingly simple ingredients like chicken. They can be expired, spoiled, “condemned”, altogether uninspected, or parts of the chicken that contain no meat at all.

“The wholesome ingredients you get from Shinto’s provide all the necessary nutrients without the sensitivities and side effects. Improve the health of your pet’s internal and external organs and give her back the vitality she’s meant to have by simply improving her diet,” says McClerin.
