As a clinical and IT leader, he created synergy between clinical operations and all manners of digital health information and technology by guiding individuals and teams focused on redesigning healthcare delivery, achieving the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award in 2020. During his tenure as Lead Clinical Informatics Liaison and CMIO, GBMC was recognized by HIMSS for stage 7 EMR adoption and the only organization to win the HIMSS Davies Award three years in a row (2019-2021) for work leveraging data & technology to improve clinical care and outcomes. Dr. Cohen participated in the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) National Database since its inception and his clinical results recognized in the top 5% of thoracic surgery practices nationwide for risk adjusted outcomes. His practice was repeatedly cited for top 1% recognition of patient centered care and patient satisfaction. Dr. Cohen was named one of America’s top doctors by US News & World Report and Castle Connolly Medical for 13 years in a row. His research in cardiac electrophysiology led to the discovery of novel electrical protection strategies for cardiac surgery and thoracic organ transplantation for which he was awarded a US Patent. Choosing to sub-specialize in General Thoracic Surgery, Dr. Cohen then completed an advanced fellowship in minimally invasive thoracic surgery and lung transplantation at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.
