proudP, an AI-enabled mobile app that measures urinary health

BPH is a common condition for men as they age.

In the US alone, there are 72M patients with urological conditions, and among these, one of the well known conditions is benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH). BPH is a common condition for men as they age. 50% of men in his 50s are known to have it with the prevalence increasing to 70% in 60s and 80% in 70s[1]. Although the condition is not known to be deadly, gradually worsening symptoms over time deteriorates patients’ quality of life[2],[3]. With the almost seemingly inevitable condition for men, 90% of practicing urologists report to be treating patients with BPH.

Patients are initially evaluated by patient- reported outcomes(PRO), administered through International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS), and urinalysis. There are more explicit measures like post-void residual (PVR) and uroflowmetry, which not only require special equipment, but often prone to less representative results attributed to inhibition of voiding under pressure[4],[5].

[5] Critical Review of Uroflowmetry Methods

There’s a startup that wants to solve this problem by allowing uroflowmetry through a smartphone. Soundable Health develops sound AI engines to empower patients to monitor their conditions. Soundable Health’s urology product, proudP, is built from 245k+ real world uroflows, and aims to provide a better self-monitoring tool for patients so that patients can easily measure, track, and monitor with aggregated data points of their urinary measures. In parallel, proudP supports doctors to better understand patients and make medical decisions based on real world data.

proudP uses sound AI technology to translate the urine sound into numerical values (i.e., voided volume, Qmax), and uroflow curve.

With the recent update of making the clinically established IPSS more accessible, the tool combines insights from both subjective and objective measures to better understand users’ conditions.

With growing users, proudP has been gathering users’ testimonies on how it not only helps with self monitoring but also serves as a communication tool with the urologists to get better symptom management. To better assist in care, proudP serves the physician community by providing a web-based dashboard, which allows access to patients’ real time aggregated data.

Digital health solutions are being widely adopted by the medical community. Since proudP is a unique offering in the urology department, proudP has also been gaining support from urology clinics. Practicing urologists and their patients with bladder and prostate conditions are talking with the data collected via proudP. The patients can freely download the app from the app store and connect with their urologist by simply entering a urologist-specific code. The app also provides intuitive score results for IPSS, which only requires answering 8 questions, allowing users to self-monitor the urinary symptoms.

Soundable Health is actively partnering with hospitals and medical centers to build clinically meaningful products. Samsung Venture Investment Corporation and Translink Investment led Soundable Health’s previous rounds of $6 million in total.
