Pallets and Bags: Keys to Success

Bags come with a lot of variables that need to be considered when stacking and palletizing, especially in automated environments. Here are 8 things to keep in mind when palletizing and moving bags.

Pallets and bags don’t always go together. Bags come with a lot of variables that need to be considered when stacking and palletizing, especially in automated environments. Here are 8 things to keep in mind when palletizing and moving bags:

Pallet Overhang

Bags hanging over the side of the pallet can cause problems. Pallet overhang may trigger a mechanical stop or an error in load transfer that requires manual correction. Your system needs to control for keeping bags within the pallet periphery.

Conveyor Gaps

Chain conveyors need gap plates to prevent bags from slipping into the gaps between the chains and holding up the entire system.

Photo Sensor Issues

Laser photo sensors can be used for bags on pallet transfers, but the sensors need to be placed and configured carefully to account for the differences in bag shape and placement.

Snags

Your palletizing conveyor has brackets, guards, and other protuberances that can easily catch and tear bags as they move through the system. You need to make sure conveying surfaces are smooth and free from catch points that will damage your inventory.

Stretch Wrapping

Stretch wrapping a pallet of bags can be tricky; the gaps and shapes may result in the film missing the surface of the product. Wrapping an unstable load is a challenge. A spinning turntable with a stationary film carriage may be a better option.

Pallets

If your pallets don’t have a consistent surface, it will be difficult to achieve consistency when palletizing bags; gaps and other pallet surface issues are magnified when bags are stacked atop them. Adding a bottom sheet to all empty pallets provides a uniform surface.

EoAt Configuration

The EoAT (end of arm tool) is a robotic tool that lifts the bags from the conveyor and places them on the pallet. The EoAT needs to be configured carefully to ensure each bag stays in place while being moved.

Exigent Circumstances

What are you going to do with the bags that aren’t quite right? If bags fail inspection, are damaged during picking, or have some other problem, how will you handle them and where will they go? Any system you create needs to have contingencies for handling bags that need further review before palletizing and transferring.

In Sum

Palletizing bags is a warehouse challenge. If you have questions about how you can create a material handling system better suited to moving bags, talk to your material handling distributor today.
