Obvious Differences Between PET And PETG

Compared with PET, China PETG plastic sheet boasts the biggest feature that PETG meets food FDA certification. People are now increasingly focusing on related PETG plastic products at home and abroad.

PET: Poly (ethylene terephthalate)

PETG: Poly (ethylene terephthalate-co-1, 4-cylclohexylenedimethylene terephthalate)

Compared with PET, China PETG plastic sheet boasts the biggest feature that PETG meets food FDA certification. People are now increasingly focusing on related PETG plastic products at home and abroad.

PET polyethylene terephthalate, a condensation, is mainly used in food packaging films and textile fibers, and other applications. With its application range becoming wider, it is used as packaging material not only for beverage bottles but also for amorphous PET (APET) and crystalline PET (CPET) cans and plates. In the last five years, new polymer products engineering-grade PET and copolyester have been applied to the engineering and specialty purposes.

Its excellent toughness and clarity, orientation capabilities, excellent economic value and rapidly developed bottle processing technology have allowed China PETG clear plastic sheet to be successfully used in bottle beverage packaging materials. PET beverage cans are lightweight, shatter-resistant, reusable, and have very good air-tight performance. A filled 2L PET beverage bottle can be 24% lighter than a comparable glass bottle, and an empty bottle weighs 1/10th of the same type of glass bottle, thus saving labor, energy, and costs in the whole process from producer to consumer.

Chemical Performance

China PETG plastic sheet for beverage bottles is produced from terephthalic acid (TPA), which is obtained by oxidation of paraxylene. Dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) is produced from purifying TPA or reacting TPA with methanol. Or TPA is further oxidized to produce pure terephthalic acid (PTA). Another basic raw material for PET is ethane, which is reacted and converted into ethylene glycol (EG). China white PETG sheet is a condensate produced by the polymerization of DMT (or PTA) with EG in the successive molten states, followed by a solid-state polymerization process to obtain large grains, final molecular weight and inherent viscosity. This solid-state process also results in a polymer with sufficiently low ethanol content. Typical PET resins melt at about 480℉ (248.89℃), but highly crystalline PET has a melting point of about 520℉ (271.11℃). Directional crystalline PET has excellent strength toughness and transparency.

Special Grade

Stretch-blow molding China PETG plastic sheet includes pure, green and lemon yellow PET. The polymers colored in the reactor requires no recombination adversely affecting physical properties and improves color uniformity. Pure resins with different inherent viscosities are available. The slow crystallization rate of PET copolymers enables the production of high-quality bottles under a wide range of processing conditions. Extrusion-blow molding polymers are also available. China white PETG sheet combines excellent melt strength with a slow crystallization rate and can be easily processed on suitable extrusion-blow molding equipment. Various reinforced, flame retardant and other specialty polymers are introduced or improved to meet new applications.

China PETG clear plastic sheet combines high stiffness, hardness and good toughness, even at low temperatures. Its transparency, toughness and melt strength enables its application to injection molding, blow molding and extrusion profiles, tubes, films and sheets. Unmodified PETG or PETG with various additives that are available to injection molding includes mold-release agents, masterbatches, and impact modifiers.

PETG should be dried at 120℉ to 160℉ (48℃-66℃) for about 4 to 6 hours before molding or extrusion, and the melt temperature should be from 420℉ to 510℉ (215℃-265℃). The pressure maintaining time of the processing equipment should be shorter at higher temperature to prevent excessive degradation. Injection molding should be performed on an injection machine with injection volume reaching 50% to 80% of its capacity. China white PETG sheet can be extrusion blow molded at melt temperatures between 400℉-450℉ (204℃-232℃) into transparent bottles for shampoos, liquid detergents, hygiene products, mineral oils and food packaging. This material meets FDA standards to directly contact food. When used for injection molding, PETG is typically processed at a melt temperature range of 450℉-510℉ (232℃-265℃) with mold temperatures between approximately 70℉-130℉ (21℃-55℃). Current applications include instrument covers, machine shrouds, cosmetic containers, lever device pointers, display components, and toys.

Mainly used in soft drink packaging, China PETG plastic sheet has nearly accounted for 100 percent of the market for 2L packaging non-recyclable containers, and 1.5L, 1L, 0.5L and smaller PETG bottles have also been widely recognized.

PETG is also used in food, alcohol, and detergents. The demand for PETG is expected to continue to grow for uncarbonated gas beverage and industrial product packaging. Foods to be packaged include mustards, gum products, peanut butter, condiments, cooking oils, cocktails, and juice concentrates. PETG has gained strong popularity in vitamin and detergent packaging.

One of the newest and fastest-growing applications for China PETG clear plastic sheet containers is food or beverage packaging that requires filling at high temperatures. Many foods, especially fruit or foods or beverages with much fruit, must be packaged at 180℉ (82.22℃) or higher, providing pasteurization of products and containers while filling. Containers create stress concentrations during stretch blow molding. Heat resistance technologies, often called “thermosetting”, has been greatly improved. Juice content beverages, teas, certain isotonic and sports drinks, flavorings, and certain mineral waters require the containers that are suitable for filling at 190℉ to 195℉ (87℃-90℃).

In addition, China white PETG sheets are widely used in extrusion coating and extrusion molding films and sheets. PET is used as an extrusion coating material for bakeable cardboard packaging, and crystalline PET (CPET) can be used as a base material for plates in ovens.

PET films are used for meat and cheese packaging, magnetic tapes, electrical insulation, printing plates, and packaging bags for bottles. Non-crystalline, un-oriented PET films and sheets begin to be applied to molded containers, trays, foam products, and beverage cups.
