Wiltshire Entrepreneur Empowers Military Spouses to Build Portable Careers Through Online Business Initiative

WILTSHIRE, UK. -- With military spouses facing some of the highest unemployment rates among any demographic in the UK, a Wiltshire-based entrepreneur is leading a growing movement to help women create flexible, portable online businesses they can take with them — wherever the next posting leads.

Cath Smith, Founder of Summit & Stream, launched her business to address the economic instability and career sacrifice often faced by military wives and partners. After years of struggling to maintain a career while moving internationally for her husband’s role, including a challenging two-year posting to the Czech Republic, Smith realised there were no business support networks that truly understood the realities of military life.

Now, with May marking Military Spouse Appreciation Month, her academy-based programme and branded business retreats are seeing a surge in demand from women globally – many of whom have been forced to give up stable careers due to frequent relocations, childcare challenges, and lack of local job opportunities.

"Military partners move every two years on average – it’s nearly impossible to maintain a traditional career or explain a fragmented CV," said Cath Smith.

"I created Summit & Stream to offer a practical and emotional support system for women who want to take control of their financial future without sacrificing family or identity."

Her first Summit Retreat in the Brecon Beacons was a sell-out success, with a TEDx speaker and a transformational itinerary culminating in a sunrise hike up Pen Y Fan. The 12-week academy that followed helps women start, brand and grow their own online businesses, with expert-led webinars, community support, and business mentoring tailored specifically for mobile lifestyles.

Cath, a qualified educator, business mentor and now board member of the Military Coworking Network, is using her platform to campaign for better career support for military families – and showing what's possible with the right tools.

“Women in the military community are resourceful, educated, and motivated — they just need the flexibility to match,” added Cath Smith. “This isn’t just about building businesses; it’s about building resilience, independence and hope.”
